Gem Rocks

The Future Looks Bright

by Amanda Weaver

The Starfish Promise Coalition, in its eighth year of existence, has entered the Internet world!  Yes, we now have a website, dedicated to and driven by the youth of the Gem Community.  Yes, we are excited!

Leading the Starfish Promise web design team is Julie Larson of Boise.  With 20 years of business experience, a degree in Computer Science, and a business owner herself, Julie volunteered her services after learning that we did not have a website.  Touched by the grass-roots efforts of the Starfish Promise Coalition, she also is passionate about making a difference in the lives of others.

Julie is an Action Business Coach.  She provides business owners with principles, strategies and processes that help them achieve their visions of success.  She is also the owner and CEO of Tradeware Technologies, LLC.  She lives in Boise with her twin children Cody and Abby, and various “critters”  under foot.

Teen Members of The Starfish Promise web site team include; Emmett High School Senior Amanda Weaver and Juniors Michael Montgomery, Melvin Benson, Matt Lewis and Lauren Rubin.  Julie and the team meet on a regular basis and are working hard to complete the website.  The entire team is focused on keeping the site fresh and chalk full of information about local activities, special events, available programs, and youth in the news.

Amanda Weaver is currently the Vice President and Secretary of EHS Auto Club, President of the Emmett Business Professionals of America club, and Cosor for the Senior Class.  Amanda is also involved in drag racing, taking “stats” for EHS Wrestling and horseback riding. She will be pursuing a degree in Computer Science with Boise State University.

Michael Montgomery is “The Yo-Yo Master” and holds the honor of being ranked 12th in the Nation!  He is Historian of the Mayor’s / Commissioner’s Youth Action Council (YAC,) Coordinator of the Idaho State Yo-Yo Championships, a loyal employee of True Value in Emmett, and an all-around extreme athlete and sports enthusiast.

Melvin Benson is currently the President of the Emmett Skate Krew (ESK,) President of the EHS Auto Club, and mentor with the Junior High after-school program, Extreme Recreation (ER.)  Melvin is an avid skateboarder and drag races (legally, of course!)     Matt Lewis can be found working hard at our Emmett Albertson’s when he is not reigning as President of the Mayor’s / Commissioner’s Youth Action Council (YAC,) or managing money as the Treasurer for the Emmett Skate Krew (ESK.)  Matt is extremely active on the YAC Presentation Team and mentors for the ER program when time allows.  Matt is also a star soccer player for Emmett High School!

Rounding out the team is the effervescent Lauren Rubin.  Recognized recently as the "Best Actress In A Comedy Role for 2006" with the Emmett Community Playhouse (ECP), Lauren adds laughter to any project.  She serves on the Board for ECP and is the EHS Junior Class Historian.  Lauren is the President of her 4-H Club and embraces acting and horseback riding.
